My name is Jason Horning and I was born in Detroit, Michigan to a couple of Jesus hippies living in a church community in the inner-city. My dad was one of the pastors at our church and both he and my mom were great examples of people who lived out their faith in God regardless of the challenges they were presented with daily. As children my two brothers and I had a blast playing every sport we could, building forts with wood from a furniture factory near by, and going on grand adventures in the big overgrown lot that was next to our home.
My Story
After High School I found myself struggling with the meaninglessness in felt in my life. I was working construction all week and partying all weekend and simply felt board and empty. I decided that if the God who was real for my parents wanted to be real for me I was ready to submit myself fully to Him…I prayed and God made it perfectly clear that He wanted me to pack a backpack and simply trust Him to lead. On a Saturday morning my parents prayed over me and my dad dropped me off on the edge of town where I would begin my journey walking and hitchhiking all across the USA. As I walked away from that intersection my faith in Jesus became a reality that I would never be able to deny.
My Journey
I traveled all around the USA trusting Jesus for guidance, safety, provision, and companionship. Over the next few years the Lord led me on many grand adventures where I learned more and more about walking by faith daily and the love that Jesus has for me.
Thirteen years ago the Lord took me from a homeless shelter in Fairbanks, Alaska to Colorado where I seem to have grown roots. Eleven years ago the Lord miraculously allowed me to begin working as a youth pastor and over the years I have had the amazing privilege of getting Bachelors degree in Pastoral Ministry and am now working toward my Masters of Divinity from Southern Evangelical Seminary.
Seven years ago I married a hot snowboarding chick named Kelly and we now have two awesome children; Josiah and Layla with one more getting ready to make an appearance in November. I thought life was an adventure before; it is nothing compared to the beauty of being a husband and father… I love it!!!
What I Do at Rock Creek Church
At Rock Creek I have the privilege of walking with and leading tons of High School and Middle School students and I get to organize a rockin team of adult leaders. I love Jesus and I love students so for me nothing is better then being able to play a part in a young adult realizing the Love that Jesus has for them and walking with them as they grow in their relationship with the Lord.
