Rock Creek Church

OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1997 in Superior, Rock Creek Church sought to reach families of every size. The church flourished. After years of meeting in schools, the church sought a place to call home. That quest eventually led us to our current site. In 2008, founding Pastor Galen Huck returned to the church that planted Rock Creek to serve as the Senior Pastor. With the arrival of Chris Coté as Lead Pastor, along with Gary Preston as Executive Pastor and Jason Horning as Youth Pastor, a new chapter is being written.

Rock Creek continues to be an outward focused multigenerational community with an interdenominational feel. We’re serious about the stuff that matters, and casual about the stuff that doesn’t. To accommodate recent growth, we have county-approved plans to double the size of the facility.

Our Leadership

We are governed by an Elder Board who along with the Pastors comprise the Shepherding Team. The Pastors and staff lead and manage day-to-day ministry, also with a team approach.

Chris Coté - Lead Pastor

My name is Chris Coté, and I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit. My Dad (Jim) was involved in corporate real estate and my Mom (Barb) took care of me and my four-year younger sister, Melynie. I grew up in the Christian bubble, attending a great church (Highland Park Baptist Church) and school Southfield Christian) until attending Oakland University.

My Story

I accepted Christ in fourth grade. But, it wasn’t until college that following Jesus as the Lord of my life began to have any real personal meaning. Working for the campus police department exposed me to a lot I had been sheltered from previously. And, I met a girl named Cami who got me thinking seriously about life because I was in love. With a Political Science degree (B.A.) for me, and a Nursing degree (B.S.N.) for her, we married in 1994.

My Journey

God radically changed my long-held interest in pursuing a legal and political career during our first year of marriage, leading me to earn a Master of Theology (Th.M.) degree at Dallas Theological Seminary. I’ve pastored two churches in Texas (5 years) and a church in Michigan (7 years). Cami worked the first half of our marriage getting me through school, took time off to raise two wonderful daughters (Ayanna 7, Aryssa 4), and is just easing back into part-time work beyond our home.

God led me to Rock Creek Church in the Fall of 2008. These first two years have been an wonderful tale of his providence, power, and amazing people. I wake each morning thinking “I get to do this, here, with them!?” Can’t wait to see what happens next…

What I Do at Rock Creek Church

I work together with our Executive Pastor Gary Preston to shepherd Rock Creek. My role as Lead Pastor is to keep us in step with the Holy Spirit together, to communicate what God has to say, and to make Jesus known in our community.

Gary Preston - Executive Pastor

I'm a Colorado native, growing up in Denver in a devout Christian family and healthy church in SW Denver that developed in me a love for Christ and his church. I'm married and we have 2 grown boys, Nate (29) & Tim (27).

My Story

During my college years at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA, I began to sense God's call on my life for vocational Christian ministry. That was a call that was pretty easy to answer since I had a very positive view of the local church and a high view of Christian ministry. My college years provided the opportunity to serve in a local church in Santa Barbara and be discipled/mentored by an outstanding youth pastor at Trinity Baptist Church. That positive experience was followed by 3 years at Denver Seminary and then God's sense of humor really kicked in as I ended up doing missionary service in Italy, rather than becoming a youth pastor as I had intended. But it was in Italy where I developed an unexpected love for missions that has remained to this day. It's also the place I met my sweetheart Suzanne, who was also doing short-term mission work there! We were married in Italy, stayed a year longer and then moved to Vienna, Austria, where I pastored the International Chapel of Vienna. Our 2 sons were both born in Vienna. We finally moved back to the U.S. in the mid-80s and have been involved in local church ministry in CO since then.

My Journey

My wife and I began attending Rock Creek Church in 2002, during a break from vocational church ministry that I was taking. We quickly found it to be the kind of church that renewed our souls and refreshed our vision for what the local church should be. In 2006, I was invited by the founding pastor to join him on the staff as Executive Pastor, and have served in that role since then.

What I Do at Rock Creek Church

As Executive Pastor my role is pretty diverse. I handle the administrative and business functions of the church, elders and staff. In addition, I'm involved in teaching & preaching ministries, leadership nurture and leading the development of our international missions involvements. My desire is that RCC continue to develop and refine an intentional missional outreach focus to our local community as we have done internationally, and I enjoy working with Chris & Jason on that.

Jason Horning - Youth Pastor

My name is Jason Horning and I was born in Detroit, Michigan to a couple of Jesus hippies living in a church community in the inner-city. My dad was one of the pastors at our church and both he and my mom were great examples of people who lived out their faith in God regardless of the challenges they were presented with daily. As children my two brothers and I had a blast playing every sport we could, building forts with wood from a furniture factory near by, and going on grand adventures in the big overgrown lot that was next to our home.

My Story

After High School I found myself struggling with the meaninglessness in felt in my life. I was working construction all week and partying all weekend and simply felt board and empty. I decided that if the God who was real for my parents wanted to be real for me I was ready to submit myself fully to Him…I prayed and God made it perfectly clear that He wanted me to pack a backpack and simply trust Him to lead. On a Saturday morning my parents prayed over me and my dad dropped me off on the edge of town where I would begin my journey walking and hitchhiking all across the USA. As I walked away from that intersection my faith in Jesus became a reality that I would never be able to deny.

My Journey

I traveled all around the USA trusting Jesus for guidance, safety, provision, and companionship. Over the next few years the Lord led me on many grand adventures where I learned more and more about walking by faith daily and the love that Jesus has for me.

Thirteen years ago the Lord took me from a homeless shelter in Fairbanks, Alaska to Colorado where I seem to have grown roots. Eleven years ago the Lord miraculously allowed me to begin working as a youth pastor and over the years I have had the amazing privilege of getting Bachelors degree in Pastoral Ministry and am now working toward my Masters of Divinity from Southern Evangelical Seminary.

Seven years ago I married a hot snowboarding chick named Kelly and we now have two awesome children; Josiah and Layla with one more getting ready to make an appearance in November. I thought life was an adventure before; it is nothing compared to the beauty of being a husband and father… I love it!!!

What I Do at Rock Creek Church

At Rock Creek I have the privilege of walking with and leading tons of High School and Middle School students and I get to organize a rockin team of adult leaders. I love Jesus and I love students so for me nothing is better then being able to play a part in a young adult realizing the Love that Jesus has for them and walking with them as they grow in their relationship with the Lord.
