Have you ever experienced agony? I mean true agony to the point where you are not sure that you can go on? You're not sure that you have what it takes to endure what you are feeling? Where you are filled with such despair, such distress, such unspeakable emotion. Agony. Maybe you haven't experienced it personally, but you are like me where you've witnessed it several times over. A loud cry of, "NO! This isn't happening…. I can't go on…!" This is agony! Have you been there, have you seen it, have you heard it?
Here…in this moment…this beautiful gut wrenching agony describes the climax of the mysterious soul-conflict and unspeakable suffering of our Lord in the Garden at Gethsemane. It is true that Christ's suffering found its climax on the cross, but His intense pain, sorrow, and loneliness began in the Garden as Jesus faced intense agony in the darkness. Theologian and Author - John Wesley wrote: "Jesus was surrounded with sorrow on every side, breaking in upon him with such violence, as was ready to separate his soul from his body."
